Final Painting - Control Surfaces & Doors

Last but not least are all the control surfaces, doors, and cowling.  There are a few additional panels that I did not get painted during this final process but they can all be painted at home and   don't require the paint booth and all the other preparations.

The ailerons, flaps, doors, elevators, and rudder all needed painting and needed to be supported off the floor and accessable from both sides and above.  I used duct tape, nylon cord, PVC pipe with aluminum pipes inside to give added strength.  I installed hooks into the PVC pipe to use for attachment of loops to hooks screwed into the control parts.

Used one of the wing stands for holding the lower fuselage off the ground for painting.  The doors were hung using the cord looped around the mounting bolts with the hope they would hold.  Used the wing stands to hold up the elevator controls.

The cowling looks great with no identifiable problems.  The doors and other control surfaces came out reat.  Only issue was on one of the elevators that didn't not get good coverage but still looks good if you don't use a magnifying glass.

The ailerons and flaps looked good.

I left the hangar after we finished the painting and I loaded the gasoline powered compressor on a rental truck to return it to the rental shop.  I wasn't able to get back out to the hangar for two weeks.  When I did I found a surprise.  I had used nylon rope and duct tape to attach the hangars used to support the parts.  It had been well over 100 degrees many of the days during the two weeks and the heat degraded the tape and caused some of the attachments to fail.

I pulled the plastic covering off so I could take some photos of the results.  It was too unbelievalbe that both ends holding the ailerons and the flaps had given way but nothing had actually fallen to the floor and nothing had gotten damaged.  For once in my life, I got lucky.

Everything back in the  hangar after  painting, taking  down the paint booth and storing the steel  framework.  Kept one small part of the paint booth to build a small pilot lounge that I could cool with the portable airconditioner that I bought for cooling the paint booth.  Gives me an excape to kool down when the hangar temperatures get near and above the 100 degree mark.
