With
this cowling not being easily removeable an access door must be
provided to get to the Oil Dipstick to check the oil level. I cut
the above opening in the top of the cowling to provide access directly
below.
I found a hinge on an access panel from a
wreak at the local Air Salvage operation. I removed the original
panel and attached the hinge to the panel I had cut out and to the
cowling.
A
glass layer was bonded to the inside of the cowling.
This
will make the lip aroung the opening.
The
latches were added to the panel and the center section cut out to
provide the needed inside lip.
I
blew it with installing the latches before I fit the lip and put them
too close to the edge. Should have been back 1/2 in.
The
door has been trimmed to round the corners.
Tape
was applied to the edges and the gaps filled.
After
multiple filling and sanding operations the door was primed along with
the cowling. Looks OK?
Final
painting of the cowling and the oil dipstick door.

Perfect?
No exactly. Whe latched it pulls down more than I had wanted and
slightly distorts the panel. The photo actually makes it look
worse than it is.
While it's
not perfect it works as intended and I like it. Double latch was
not necessary but I it's not going to come open in flight and it ties
the corners down tight.
